Switzerland ratified the Paris Agreement in October 2017, and in doing so made a legally-binding commitment to be Net Zero by 2050.
Quantifying the Baselines
With Switzerland’s current policies, infrastructure and behaviours, and without any action taken, Switzerland would emit
1’260 Metric Tons of CO2 equivalent gases* (MT CO2 eq.)
during the period 2020-2050.
*MT CO2 eq. is the metric for reporting global warming potential from all greenhouse gases
To meet the obligations of the Paris agreement and keep the planet on track to not exceed 1.5°C warming compared to pre-industrial levels, Switzerland can only emit
230 MT CO2 eq.
between 2020-2050.
Switzerland must therefore reduce its emissions by
1'030 MT CO2 eq. during this period.
Where are all of these emissions coming from?
The emissions that have been calculated are from all sources of Switzerland’s activity as a country
And there are only a very limited number of sinks (natural CO2 absorbers like forests, peat lands, etc) within Switzerland to absorb the emissions that are generated
So the goal is to reduce the sources, and increase the sinks.
The good news is there are solutions to decrease the emissions and increase the sinks to bring Switzerland’s emissions down dramatically. We must now determine the combinations of solutions that are right for Switzerland, and quickly implement them.
